The first visit was by Easyjet
from Luton to Madrid, then train to Cartegena and then a 10 mile bus
journey to the site. This really requires backpacks and some knowledge
of Spanish to deal with the transport systems, just finding the right
bus stop can be quite difficult. If you want to spend a day or two in
Madrid, as we did, this fits in nicely. Once at El Portus we travelled
around on foot or bus so soon had a good feel for the area. Some days we
went walking in the hills surrounding the camp site (you don't meet many
walkers in our experience so walking with minimal clothing is not much
of a risk). |

A trip to Cartagena is rewarding, an
impressive city with fine buildings, a Moorish castle, and
still largely untouched by tourism. The harbour was being redeveloped
when we were there (both times!) and promises to add significantly to
the city's appeal.
